How Hardcover Binding Works

Hardcover binding involves several steps, including:
Collating and folding the pages: The pages of the book are printed and folded into signatures, which are then gathered together to form a book block.
Sewing the signatures: The signatures are sewn together to form a text block. This step helps to create a durable binding that can withstand years of use.
Attaching the endpapers: Endpapers are the first and last pages of the book block, which are glued to the inside of the cover. The endpapers help to reinforce the binding and create a finished look.
Making the cover: The cover is made from stiff material such as cardboard or binder's board, which is cut to size and shaped to fit the book block. The cover is then covered with cloth, leather, or paper.
Attaching the cover to the book block: The cover is attached to the book block using adhesive. The adhesive is applied to the spine of the book block and the cover is carefully positioned over it. The cover is then pressed firmly in place.
Finishing: Once the cover is attached, the book is trimmed on all sides to create clean, even edges. The spine of the book is then lettered or decorated using printed or embossed designs.
